DGS issues Order for prohibition of single-use plastic on ships

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) on October 16, 2019, has issued an Order for prohibition of single-use plastic on Indian ships and foreign ships while such ships are in Indian waters. It shall come into force with immediate effect.

Considering the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) 2018 report on ‘Single-use plastics- A Roadmap for Sustainability’, International Clean-up Report, 2017, the independence day speech by Hon'ble Prime Minister urging people and government agencies to "take the first big step" on October 2, 2019 towards freeing lndia of single-use plastic and stakeholders meeting on August 29, 2019 under the chairmanship of Director General of Shipping and Additional Secretary to Government of India for taking possible efforts by the Indian shipping to contribute towards achieving the goal of making India and Indian waters free from Single use plastic, a ban is imposed on single-use plastic on Indian ships and foreign ships while in Indian water.

This shall apply to all ships which are deemed to be Indian Ships under Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 and Foreign ships in any port or place in lndia. 

Prohibition of certain items to be effective from January 1, 2020 are as follows:

1.Bags, trays, containers, food packaging film;

2.Milk bottles, freezer bags, shampoo bottles, ice cream containers;

3.Bottles for water and other drinks, dispensing containers for cleaning fluids, biscuit trays;

4.Hot drink cups, insulated food packaging, protective packaging for fragile items, and

5.Microwave dishes. ice cream tubs, potato chip bags, bottle caps.

Prohibition of items with immediate effect are as follows:

1.Cutlery plates and cups;

2.Up-to 10 litres bottles for water and other drinks;

3.Garbage and shopping bags, and

4.Dispensing containers for cleaning fluids which are less than 10 litres volume.

Thus, aII recognized organizations are directed during surveys, inspection and audits of lndian ships to ensure that single-use plastic is not found on ships or discharged in the water for the purpose of safe, secure, environmentally sound, sustainable shipping in public interest.
