The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) on October 7, 2019 has issued a notification on selling of packaged and natural mineral water in open market without BIS number.

However, all food business operators must obtain license or registration before commencement of any food business vide section 31 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Accordingly, the regulations under food safety and standards (prohibition and restrictions on sales) regulations 2011 states that:

a)No person shall manufacture, sell or exhibit for sale packaged drinking water except under the Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Mark.

b)No person shall manufacture, sell or exhibit for sale mineral water except under the “Bureau of Indian Standards Certification Mark (BSI)”

Thus, to clarify these regulations, FSSAI has made it mandatory to obtain license, BIS certification and fancy name or abbreviations of such food products shall not be used.
